Demon Girl (The Rae Wilder Novels) BY Penelope Fletcher

Demon Girl (The Rae Wilder Novels) Penelope Fletcher

WARNING THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS.

"Rae Wilder has problems. Supernatural creatures swarm the earth, and humanity is on the brink of extinction. Stalked by a handsome fairy who claims she is like him, demonkind, Rae thinks maybe it was a mistake breaking the rules by going over the Wall into demon territory. Plunged into a world of dark magics, fierce creatures, and ritual sacrifice, she is charged with a guarding a magical amulet. The changes to her mind and body are startling, but rather than accept her purpose she struggles against who she is destined to be. Throw in a big lust for a vampire who can't keep his hands off her, and life starts to get complicated. Rae is forced to make the ultimate choice: to live and die human, or embrace her birth-right and wield magics that could turn her into something wicked, a force of nature nothing can control. Young Adult: British English (BrE)"

The world has changed. Humans are now the endangered species. They mostly live in protected compounds run by ruling sects. The Demons live outside the compounds. Humans have been brought up to fear all demons, to see them as primitive, violent and senseless animals. Demons are anything non~human, be that Fairy, Vampire, goblin or shifter.

Rae, parentless, has been brought up within the compound. She is a disciple, who will one day be a cleric ~ clerics protect humans from demons. However, she has always felt different from everyone around her. She is faster, stronger, feels differently and is fiercely protective of her personal space.

One day changes all of that. She meets Breandan, who tells her what she is and claims her as his own. She discovers that she has powers that she never dreamed of. That she is a different person to whom she thought that she was. The world is a different place to what she believed.

There then begins a triangle which reminded me a little of "Twilight", with Breandan being the one that Rae is falling in love with but Tomas, the vampire, has captured a part of her too. Not only does she lust after him but she also feels drawn to him, despite the fact that they should be enemies.

In addition to the ever present threat from some humans (the clerics) and other demons, there is a political war between fairy factions. These are not cute "Tinkerbell" fairies ~ these will fight to the death, torture, drink sacrificial blood and do anything to secure their desires.

Rae finds herself caught between the boy she is falling in love with and the boy she lusts after. She is caught between warring fairy factions, both of whom wish to claim her as their own. She is caught between the human and demonic world. She already has to deal with the fact that she is not human, that she knows nothing about her family and demonic creatures are fighting over her ~ but then she finds out that she is not 18 years old as she believed but was actually born more than 200 years ago. This girl has a lot to deal with!

Rae is a kick~ ass type of heroine. She is feisty and rash ~ someone who has not learnt to hold her tongue even when it places her in danger. The book was fast paced and action packed. I enjoyed it and have purchased the sequel "Demon Day".

98. Demon Day (The Rae Wilder Novels) Penelope Fletcher
Rae Wilder Novels: Book Two.

“Rae is falling into darkness. Grieving the death of her friend at the hand of dark magics, she is full of hate and vengeance. Tracking Devlin and his followers across demon territory, she is forced to turn to the local shifter pack for help. Tricked into rescuing the Pack Alpha’s daughters from the Temple, she learns there really is no place more dangerous than home. Breandan the fairy is done being patient. He wants Rae to stand by his side and refuses any claim they are not destined to be. Unsure, Rae denies him the right to have her, but will the urges of her nature and the strength of their bond allow her to walk away? Then there is Tomas, the alluring vampire who needs her help. But what exactly does he expect of her, and is the cost of helping him worth turning her back on life itself? Courted by the dark, and in love with the light, Rae must choose her path, or face the burden of Rupturing the world once more. Young Adult: British English (BrE)"

WARNING ~ SPOILERS IN REVIEW.

Wow ~ what a fab book! Action packed and fast paced throughout the whole story ~ and definitely not for kids as the sexual tension positively vibrates throughout the book. Rae is a passionate, sexual creature (as demonstrated by her desire for Tomas, despite her growing love for Breandan). There is a particularly sexy scene where Rae and Breandan are dancing with the Shifters, in what is obviously an act of erotic foreplay. Later in the book, they are separated and their enforced distance means that the bond builds and builds until their reunion is positively explosive and extremely sexy and erotic. The reunion scene is brilliantly written, compulsive reading, truly electrifying and realistically passionate.

The book is unpredictable. It has twists and turns that I did not foresee. Characters reappear that I didn’t expect to see again. Characters that appear trustworthy and honourable deceive and harm. In addition to the mounting sexual tension in the story, the violence also escalates to horrific proportions. The book’s pace increases as the story progresses and the ending is as unexpected as it is violent.

Only one of part of the story seemed strangely contrived to me ~ and that was the visit to Papa Obe. They left a particular situation, went to visit Papa Obe and then went back to the original situation. It seemed a foolish and time consuming thing to do when time was an issue with them. I know that a protective spell was secured but it didn’t really add to the story in any way.

This was, overall, a really good read ~ I was really tired last night, had trouble keeping my eyes open but still couldn’t put the book down. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Demon Dark (Rae Wilder) by Penelope Fletcher

"Rae’s fragile emotions are becoming unhinged. Lochlann demands she keeps the bond with his brother secret, and the duties of High Priestess threaten to crush her rebellious nature, diminishing her glow. Breandan is her warrior, her light in the dark, but even he cannot hope to protect Rae from her own blood, and the extremes his need to possess her push him to. At odds with his kin, struggling with his own purpose, he fights for his claim on Rae to be honored. Rae must break the irons of doom and embrace her fate. She must become the Priestess demonkind cry out for, and wield magics that are hers by birthright. Or watch from the arms of her love as her Wyld perishes in flames. Young Adult: British English"

This is the third book in the series and I really enjoyed it. It plunges straight back in to the story, the first page of this book continuing where book two finished. The reader is therefore plunged straight in to a fast paced chase scene! Once more Rae is forced to buck stereotypes as the apparent "bad guys" help her and she finds that she can't always trust the people that she loves! The story continues with enough twists and turns to keep the reader reluctant to put the book down. The reader is drawn in to a world of humans, faeries, shape-shifters, witches and vampires. The story is highly emotional as it explores romantic and familial love, individual, tribe and even species loyalty. I enjoyed the way that the author explores relationships, their complexities and nuances. The fast paced action literally fills virtually every page of the book, as Rae rushes from one conflict to the next, insecure, unsure but ultimately acting on pure instinct. The ending of the book took me totally by surprise and I stared at the page numbly at the unexpected twist. I will be purchasing the sequel Demon Boy (available in the Summer) as soon as I am able to pre-order it!
