Darklands series by Autumn Dawn

The Charmer (Dark Lands) Autumn Dawn

"What would you do if your best friend was the wolf queen? Jasmine didn’t realize her friend Wiley was something special until they were both drawn into another world. Here Wiley is the ruler of the Haunt, a were race as dangerous as they are proud. Cousins to wolves, they have no place for an ordinary human, especially one set on helping their reluctant princess escape. Keilor is the master of soldiers, a man few would cross, yet he’d never met a menace like the little brunette his princess called friend. Determined to protect Wiley in their own way, the two cross verbal daggers as Jasmine tries to find the portal home. But when Wiley begins to develop feelings for her betrothed, Jasmine is at a loss. Should she still try to run, or act on the animal attraction between her and her wolfman?"

This was an enjoyable book, with some very sexy scenes in it (sexy but not graphic). Within a couple of pages we are transported from an Alaskan wilderness to an alien planet with shape shifting human/wolves, charmers, symbionts and bad guys galore. Not only do Jasmine and Wiley have to become accustomed to their new home, they have to decide whether to give in to their feelings to their shape shifting suitors, decide who truly is a friend or foe and fight for their very lives, amidst kidnapping, drugging, experimentation, prejudice and a trailer load of emotional baggage from their previous lives. A good read Amazon Kindle 70p

The Golden Bell (Darklands) by Autumn Dawn

"You can bring them in from the wild, but you can’t always tame them….
Fallon is a man with a bloody past, and a rough and ready way with justice. Rain is a woman on the run, and now she’s under his command. She’s outsmarted men before, but is she woman enough to handle him? "

Darklands is a planet accessible through a gate in Alaska. A planet where The Haunt live ~ shapeshifters who switch between human and wolverine form. Rain has been on the run for a year, since the brutal murder of her Father ~ by members of The Haunt. She has humans and members of The Haunt wanting to kill her. She wants to find her Father's killer, avenge his death and start a new, quiet & boring life. She doesn't count on falling in love or moving to a different world!
This is the second Darklands book that I've read and I enjoyed this book too. Real life and fantasy are woven together in stories fall of adventure and sensuality.

49. Scent of Danger (Darklands) by Autumn Dawn

"Ever fall in love with the wrong man? With a body to make a young girl sigh and a voice like black velvet, Mathin is definitely the wrong man. He’s not safe, he’s not stable…he’s not even human. Andrea doesn’t know what she’s getting into when she agrees to visit her granny. Swept away to another world by a man almost too hot to handle, she can’t decide if it’s a dream come true or someone’s idea of a sick joke. Romanced by the light of the triple moons, entranced by Mathin’s fiery kisses, will Andrea give up her home on Earth in exchange for something wild? "

One day Andrea is a student struggling to make ends meet. The next she is in Alaska facing the news that her Gran has cancer. Then, just as suddenly, she is on a different world ~ The Darklands ~ where Gran rediscovers her youth and Andrea falls in love with a man that is as frightening as he is sexy. Mathin is a Haunt ~ a shapeshifting wolf ~ a warrior and a warlord. Andrea wants to make love desperately but in the Darklands full sex represents a marriage contract. Andrea has to quickly become accustomed to her new land, with it's customs and laws. One of which is that very few babies survive the first trimester when it is the product of a Haunt and a human. Mathin struggles with his past ~ an evil sister that he himself has killed and a mad rapist for a Father. There are people that believe that his Father's blood will surface in him and he fights against that heritage. When Andrea becomes pregnant they are fighting against an uprising in his lands and they have to make the difficult decision to send her away to the swamps ~ land of Darklands humans and symbionts ~ in an attempt to save the baby. However, she is far from safe there as she becomes embroiled in a murder investigation that will reveal the existence of Mathin's siblings ~ results of his Father rapes.

Another great read from Autumn Dawn. This is another series of books that I am really enjoying reading. The author is openly Christian and therefore won't allow her characters to have full sexual intercourse before marriage but they push the boundaries pretty thoroughly and more than make up for abstinence after they marry! In Darklands the mixing of sexual fluids is the marriage ceremony and a Haunt will literally go insane if they have more than one mate (hence Mathin's rapist Father). However, they are not perfect and as full sex is defined as the mixing of fluids, they do pretty much everything else that excludes that lol. The men of The Haunt are strong, very sexy and protective. They are believe deeply in honour and protect those that they love with their lives. The beautiful world of Darklands is far from perfect with it's rebellious underbelly, political rivalries that are dangerous and often fatal (as seen in The Golden Bell book) ) and wild creatures. The world Autumn has created is rich in detail and creates a wonderfully exotic, sensual and vivid mental picture for readers. I am really enjoying this fantasy series.

Coming Home (Darklands) by Autumn Dawn

"She can feel it in the air…they’re coming for her. She fears the wolf in her blood; he is the king of them all. Can a woman who fights her inner beast let the master of the hunt rule her, too? "

This is a shorter book than the others ~ it tells the same story as The Charmer[b] but from Wiley's perspective, instead of Jasmine's. This story finishes earlier than The Charmer does. Wiley grew up in an orphanage (with Jasmine), abandoned by her Mother. She is a wild spirit, happiest most when she is outside, in the wilderness. One of her trips has surprising consequences when she meets visitors from The Darklands. They claim that she is a long lost cousin. That she was born in the Darklands and was lost to them during a battle. One of these men, a Haunt ~ Lord of all The Haunt ~ claims that they were betrothed before she went missing at the age of just 4years old. He still wants to marry her but he is a stranger to her. Another enjoyable book from the series, full of intrigue, double~dealing and sensuality.

Ghost in her Heart (Darklands) by Autumn Dawn

Every man has a little beast inside...every woman longs to tame him.
The quintisential geek, Vana had never had a lover. The ultimate warrior, Dagon had never had a wife. Thanks to a rift in space, she's about to become both.

In this book the story moves from The Haunt and their Citadels, past the swamps with their humans and symbionts and to the Beast men (humans) beyond. There are two warring groups in this land. In the previous generation one used chemical warfare to unleash a terrible virus that meant their enemies could only bear male children ~ female babies would miscarry. The virus was airbourne though and devastated both groups. They are now on the brink of extinction as so few females have been born to carry on the next generation and even those few nearly always bear sons. In sheer desperation, a plan is executed, kidnapping women from earth to provide women uninfected by the virus and able to bear female off spring.

Vana is one of the kidnapped. The women are cherished, protected and cared for in her new home. They can do practically anything they want BUT they MUST marry and have children. They are given a pill to ensure that they only bear female babies. Vana is scientist and not only does she rebel against her kidnapping, she is frightened by her over whelming attraction to the Tzar (leader), enraged by how little male children are cared for and un~nerved by the imbalances she witnesses in her new home. She needs to chose as to whether to continue her plan to escape back to Earth or embrace the role of Tzara and use her power to change societies rules for the better.

This book wasn't as good as the ones about The Haunt ~ it's characters weren't quite as captivating and it seemed less descriptive. However, it was still a good book that I enjoyed reading.

Autumn Dawn is a Christian author with strong beliefs, which has surfaced in much of the series, where her characters fool around but don't actually have full sex before marriage, blessings are said at meal times and other spiritual references. The references have been subtle enough to not bother non~Christians.

However, in this book she tackles her beliefs about homosexuality and the group that practices it, is left to die out (no females to carry the lines on) or become extinct, at the end of the book. I am not prepared to state my personal opinion about this subject as I am the site moderator and should always remain impartial whenever possible. I am a Bible~based Christian and have my own beliefs but they are not pertinent to my role on here. However I do recognise that there are some readers that would find the author's feelings about homosexuality disturbing and as such I felt that I should mention this incase they would prefer not to read the book.

Beast Wars (Darklands) by Autumn Dawn

Dey has a taste for ancient treasure—Keg is the one assigned to guard it. Ancient ziggurats protected by forgotten technology are no match for Dey, but Keg is one challenge she can't dismiss. Sexy and irrepressible, Keg doesn't understand why the woman in the pink snakeskin jacket would swagger around with a gun. What better way to keep her out of trouble than to make her his own?

I really enjoyed the books in this series when they were about the Haunt. However this book and the previous one (both set with the Beast Men) ~ Ghost in her heart ~ disappointed me. The book had potential but it felt rushed, as though the author wanted to get it finished. Again (like the previous book) the characters weren't as captivating and the environment descriptions were less vivid and not as intriguing. This felt like it had the potential to be a good story but it didn't feel fully developed.

The errors were really annoying too. I have found that Kindle books do have more errors in the text than their paper equivalents but there were an awful lot in this book. Quite aside from the grammatical and spelling errors, the fraction 3/4 appeared in the middle of sentences repeatedly. Even more frustrating was the way that names were muddled. Luna was mistakenly called Leo (her sister's name) several times and at one point Keg is called Roac. I like to completely immerse myself in a story when I read a book and these errors are very annoying as they pull the reader away from the plot.
